E-Responsibility

index

With the recent and rapid expansion of web technologies accessible at Work, Home and within Education, it is becoming increasingly more complex to manage being safe online. Within Education our responsibilities go beyond keeping learners safe but also requires us to raise awareness and develop learners skills in recognising the implications of unsafe behaviour especially when conducted online.

E-Responsibility falls under  ‘Digital Literacy‘ which encourages us to broaden the competencies of learners when using digital technologies and further helps to transforms learners into effective Digital Citizens. It considers enabling learners to take responsibility of their actions and the subsequent issues that can arise from unsuitable online behaviour. Embedding E-Responsibility encourages learners to identify risks and take necessary steps to protect themselves whilst also supporting learners to avoid the misuse of technology. Importantly it empowers learners to behave responsibly and speak out and persuade others to challenge negative communications online.

Computer Security SignThese responsibilities extend from security awareness such as sharing passwords to general and personal information sharing. It includes about respecting yourself to keep your ‘Digital Identity’ and recognising ownership of electronic content relating to copyright law and Creative Commons. Furthermore it considers our online persona within online communities and how that would compare to face to face meetings.

In addition, one large part of being responsible online is adhering to policies, guidelines and procedures. These may govern how you as a staff member (and students) will conduct yourself whilst using e-learning and online technologies. Institute guidance and policies can be accessed via Moodle for further information.
