What is E-Learning?

There can be some confusion and difference of interpretation when it comes to ‘E-Learning’. Simply put ‘E-Learning’ is ‘Electronic Learning’ but in a fast evolving technological world this meaning has to expanded. Furthermore some confusion can occur when terms such as ‘Functional ICT’ and ‘Digital Literacy’ are presented in the mix.

E-Learning is learning that can be facilitated  though the use of technology. Some key words need to be expanded here.

Facilitated – ensures that the use of e-learning is not prescriptive and allows learners to work more autonomously without, what some people consider, the ‘Chalk & Talk’ or  ‘Death by Power point’. Its giving the means to learners to self-manage, reflect and evaluate their learning whilst the tutor role remains as a guide and the authority within the learning environment. Its creating learning opportunities that are fun, engaging and motivating whilst providing the platform to stretch and challenge learners.

Technology – this can now be interpreted to include not only hardware based solutions such as phones, tablets, computers and specialist machines but also a wide range of software based technologies both on the internet and as standalone software products. This includes Web 2.0 collaborative technologies that help remove traditional barriers of access and truly make learning ‘anytime, anywhere’

An effective combination of effective teaching activities delivered using e-learning methodology can help increase learner participation, motivation, achievements, behaviour, whilst embedding essential Digital Literacies needed for future employability.
